Overview

CDNetworks seeks a System Engineer Intern to join our Operations team to assist in managing all aspects of Internet Data Center (IDC) operations in the Americas and Europe, including - but not limited to - facility build out, equipment deployment, provisioning new IDC cross connects, and maintaining inventory of IDC related parts to support daily operations.

Successful candidates will have proven IDC management experience for a large geographically-distributed network, a consistent sense of urgency, a strong sense of IDC operational standards and best practices, demonstrable troubleshooting skills, excellent communication skills, attention to detail, experience working with other Operations teams (especially Network Engineering and Systems Engineering), and the desire to employ those skills in a fast-paced, dynamic 24x7x365 mission-critical environment.

Responsibilities

Planning

  • Track capacity, usage and availability of rack units, power, and IDC parts - tracked in a monthly report for Operations management, and ad-hoc as needed if Service Delivery team identifies a need to deploy equipment into new or existing IDC(s)
  • Document and enforce IDC best practices and standards

Provisioning

  • Manage installation (at physical layer) and handoff (to Systems and/or Network teams) of new equipment at IDC
  • Perform systems administration tasks (e.g., kickstart) on behalf of Systems Engineering teams
  • Perform auditing and corrections of new server configurations
  • Manage regular inventory of IDC parts necessary for rapid deployments
  • Provision network circuits (at physical layer) and handoff (Network teams) of new cross connect orders within the datacenter

Deployment

  • Systems & system-level components (e.g., HDD, PCI, etc.)
  • Network devices & network device components (e.g., blade, module, GBIC, etc.)
  • Transit & transport links: order/install/termination of fiber, dark fiber, cross-connects, etc.
  • Patch panels/Wire Managers
  • PDUs
  • Cable management (fiber, CAT5, power, etc.)

Documentation

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date IDC parts inventory
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date PoP documentation (wiki, asset-tracking, etc.)
  • Develop and maintain list of 3rd-party contractors for ad-hoc remote hands tasks

Job Requirements

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or Associate’s degree program required. Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, software engineering, or similar technical field of study or equivalent practical experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of Linux operating systems.
  • Knowledge of networking concepts, technologies, and protocols.
  • Capable of performing hardware maintenance on production servers with strong emphasis on process to ensure uptime.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to learn and process technology quickly.
  • Ability to be 24/7 on-call and carry a cell phone
  • Must have a clean driving history.
  • Must have to lift, push, pull and/or carry the weight of up to 45 pounds of server and peripheral equipment.
  • Good communication and ability to interact with IDC vendors (quotations, RHS, in-bound/out-bound ticket, shipping and delivering).
